Adoption Rescue Coordinator

Scope of Work

Saving Sumter's Strays was founded in 2016 with the sole purpose of vamping up the rescue program at Sumter Animal Control. Our volunteer-based organization is the bridge between the shelter and a happy ending. We are not an open-intake rescue, as our primary focus is helping the animals that find themselves in our local shelter. Our program has grown and evolved in the past couple of years. In addition to rescue networking, we are now responsible for the adoption program at the shelter, as well as providing medical care and other supplies to enhance the care of the animals while they stay at the shelter.


Essential Job Duties

The adoption /rescue coordinator is responsible for seeking and securing a placement for the animals at Saving Sumter’s Strays with other rescues, facilitating adoptions, and overseeing daily activities at the shelter.

The Adoption/Rescue Coordinator oversees the transfer of shelter animals to various rescue organizations or the Adoption into families.

Essential Functions and Job Responsibilities:

1. Work collaboratively with Veterinarians, Animal Control Staff and Volunteers to meet program goals of finding placements for adoptable animals.

2. Responsible for seeking and securing a placement with other rescues for animals currently at Saving Sumter’s Strays

3. Manage, maintain and grow the network of rescue partners.

4. Assist the Technician and Doctor as needed.

5. Responsible for arranging or driving animals to meet transports when necessary.

6. Process application and contact new adopter or rescue partners.

7. Ensure records are current in Pet Point

8. Reviews volunteer applications, interviews and screens potential volunteers, and determines appropriate placement.

9. Coordinate and run adoption events. Assist with fundraiser events as needed.

10. Assist with various animal care duties as needed, including walking dogs, feedings, and cleaning kennels.

7. Confidence in handling timid, fearful animals.

8. Completes other tasks as needed including, walking dogs, cleaning kennels, feeding the animals, fundraiser events

Education and Experience Requirements:

1. Minimum 1-year experience in a  responsible management/leadership role.

2. Minimum 1-year experience either animal handling, care, training, etc.

3. Must possess a valid Driver’s License and insurable driving record.

4. Vet Tech experience helpful.


Physical Demands and Work Environment:

1. Must be able to bend, stoop, stretch, stand and sit for extended periods.

2. Ability to perform repetitive motions of wrists, hands, and/or fingers due to extensive computer use.

3. Work environment may be stressful at times, as overall center activities and work levels fluctuate.

4. Excellent ability to communicate both verbally and written.

5. Ability to utilize a computer and other office equipment.

6. Must be able to lift 40 pounds as needed.
