SSS volunteers will have the opportunity to give each of our animals the special love, care, and attention they need.

Volunteering at SSS

Volunteers will spend time socializing with our animals by playing with toys, giving out treats, going on walks and more. In addition, volunteers assist in the hands-on upkeep of the shelter. From walking dogs, transporting the animals, and assisting with cleaning duties, our volunteers cover all bases. The list of volunteer responsibilities goes on, and no matter the volunteer, we can assure a hands-on and fulfilling experience. We have so much appreciation for our volunteers!

Even one hour a week will help make a difference in the life of a homeless animal.

If you are interested in attending an orientation, please complete the volunteer application below. For liability reasons, we can only accept volunteers who are 18 years or older. Volunteering is a great way to enrich the lives of the animals. Volunteers are key in supporting staff and assisting in the care of the animals. If you are an animal lover we have plenty of ways for you to get involved and help!

Dog Walking and Socializing

The kennel staff takes great care of our dogs but they get cooped up sitting in their cages. The dogs would love for you to give them one-on-one attention, socialization and fun outings for some exercise.Dog walkers also provide valuable feedback on the dog’s personality while walking and how they react to other dogs and people.

Groomers

Most of the dogs come to Saving Sumter’s Strays dirty and smelly! Many have never had the experience of someone taking care of them. You can help bath and beautify the dogs. The transformations are heartwarming.

Fosters

If you can foster or know anybody that can, please let us know! For the dogs boarded at the kennel, it’s no different from sitting behind bars in their jail cells, no matter how properly they may be cared for. By having our dogs fostered, we get to know about each dog much better than when the dog is kenneled. Fostering a rescue dog in your home may be the perfect way to help. As a foster parent, you help prepare a pet for adoption by giving him or her the skills and training necessary to make a smooth transition to a forever home. By taking a dog into your home, you also open up space in crowded shelters for another dog. (Which means you're actually helping two dogs!)
*Please note, you must be a minimum of 18 years of age to submit an application.*

The need ranges from in-town transports to the Vet to out of town road trips, so let us know what you are interested in! This is a great way to get involved.
